Long, Dark Tea Party of the Soul

I remember a time when it was considered bad taste for politicians to utilize their religion to garner votes. Crass and vulgar, it was considered an impropriety not unlike bribery – offering power in exchange for support. Two for tea, and tea for two. Elect me and I’ll make America a Christian nation again, i.e., in my own image. What perhaps bothers me the most about this culture is its deep-rooted arrogance in co-opting history, decorum, even the very imago dei itself. The lie in the service of the truth is a very powerful weapon. When a case is erected on a house of cards, architects must be careful indeed.

A very ancient image for the king was that of the shepherd. This is not surprising since the early kings were not afraid to confess to being gods, and characters like Dumuzi, originally a man, later became divine. And Dumuzi was a shepherd. Sheep are seldom classed among the most intelligent of mammals, being natural followers rather than leaders. When a sheep with the right stuff led the flock, he reserved the right to claim divinity.

The same dynamic is at work in Tea Party mentality. Although the leaders would be swift to deny – the truth is in the denials – that they are anything but humble servants, old ideas die hard. Civilization was built around the idea that leaders got their mojo from on high. Kings were only gods in disguise. Modern politicians are Joe the Plumber in aspect, but Belial under the skin.

Dumuzi leading a follower to a Tea Party?

I’m not sure I “get” your comparison between the two. Could you elucidate this a bit more for me?

Full disclaimer: I’m not a big fan of the Tea-Baggers either.

      Hi Karl,

The comparison is in the sheep and in those who lead them. People are easily led. The Tea-Partiers, like ancient divine-kings, take the prerogative of the gods (or God) in assuming that role. (I like to leave a little room for guessing as well!)

Ah, that’s quite a bit clearer. I wasn’t sure if you were suggesting that Tea-Partiers had the mental fortitude to usurp a divine-political role, but it seems that we agree on this completely—it’s a simple case of the blind being led by the faux-simpletons.

The Tea Party is a creation of the liberal media. There were Tea Parties rallying against modern taxation without real representation (i.e. the bailouts), attended by repubs and dems alike, but then the media somehow spun the thing into a new political party as a new way to attack republicans by creating a divisive political party out of what was just a non-partisan protest against taxes. Anyone associating themselves with “the Tea Party” (a purely fictional entity created by the liberal media and their new front woman and agent provocateur, Sarah Palin) is a total dupe of the television so blind they can’t even see their hand in front of them.

And if anyone thinks they are a god its our good friend Barry Obama. He said in his acceptance speech after democrat primary that we would look back on that day as the day the oceans began to cease rising and the earth began to heal. Behold his mighty hand!

BO just forgot to mention he was going to drown the oceans in oil before making them stop rise and healing the earth. The devil is in the details.

May I ask how representative of minorities the parties really are?

the republicans and democrats have how many women, blacks, Hispanics and indegines?

You Know, just so Rey’s and Steve’s positions are clarified here. Which party isn’t dying due to proportional representation?

Neither party is dying. They have all the power. They even have the power to essentially keep 3rd parties off the ballot. They can put registration fees on running for office and make it a federal crime for you to not pay them out of your own pocket. They have the means to keep their power. They can’t die. Its the country that is dying. They’re killing it. And I guess once its dead, maybe they’ll die too? Or will they just morph and become the aristocracy of whatever 3rd world government rises from the ashes?
